Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Brenden

Brenden is a slight alteration of Brendan. Brendan originated from the Irish name Breandán (earlier version: Bréanainn) which came from the Welsh word “breehin” meaning ‘prince’. There are two prominent Irish saints who held this name. The most famous is the 6th century Saint Brendan the Navigator who was believed to have sailed across the Atlantic searching for the Isle of the Blessed and claiming to have set foot on American soil. His friend and contemporary, Saint Brendan of Birr, was purportedly carried heavenward by angels. While Brendan (with an “a”) has been a popular name thoughout the English speaking world, Brenden (with an “e”) is more of an Americanized respelling.

Although your son will likely go through life saying: “Brenden with an e.” People with nontraditional spellings of names often find this a nuisance. In any case, Brenden with an “e” has never been an overly popular spelling choice compared to Brendan. Not to mention all of the male names that start with Bren, Bran and Bray are altogether becoming slightly commonplace. We say stick with Brendan if you want to be true to your Irish roots. Brenden is the more phonetically appealing alternative but it’s technically not the ‘correct’ way to spell this ‘princely’ name.
