Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Brennen

Brennen is a slight Americanized respelling of the anglicized Irish surname Brennan (whereby an “e” replaces the traditional Irish “a”). Brennan was ultimately derived from the Irish clan name Ó Braonáin (where the “Ó” indicates a descendent of Braonáin). Braonáin originated as an old nickname from the Gaelic elements “braon” meaning “moisture, drop of water” plus the diminutive suffix “áin” suggesting a more specific meaning: “teardrop, sorrow”. The byname was probably given to a person who had suffered great personal tragedies. The surname Brennan is still alive and well in Ireland, particularly in the County Kilkenny region. Brennan was adopted as a given name in the United States in the 1960s and the slightly modified respelling of Brennen showed up in the late 1980s.
