Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Bryanna

Bryanna is an Americanized twist on Briana/Brianna (the female equivalent of Brian). Briana and Brianna were THE “it”-girls of the 1990s so we were surprised to see new coinages like Breanna and Bryanna show up shortly thereafter. Briana started out as an obvious girl-version of Brian in the 1970s right around the time that Brian became a gigantic success in America and a Top 10 favorite choice among parents. The development of a feminized form of this name naturally followed. Then Briana caught on like wild fire and soared up the charts in the 1980s and 90s. This is when Bryanna joined the fun. Bryanna is different in pronunciation from Briana, Brianna and Breanna (which have the “bree” sounding first syllable); Bryanna sounds more true to BRI-an (pronounced “bry” like “cry”). Brian is a name of Irish origin from the Gaelic “brígh” meaning “noble, strong, virtuous”. Unlike the modern-day female versions, Brian has been around for centuries on the Emerald Isle.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME BRYANNA

Bryanna first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1989 in reaction to the growing popularity of Brianna, Briana and Breanna. A light bulb went on over some American parent’s head when they thought, “Hey, let’s make this name more original by pronouncing it BRY-anna!” and so a name was born. And others followed suit. Like her sister names, Bryanna saw most of her success in the 1990s; although this particular spelling variation never saw anything beyond mild moderation on the charts. Now that we’ve entered the 21st century Bryanna has completely reversed her course and is fast going out of style. Brianna is s till a Top 50 in America but Bryanna is no longer top of mind. Compared to Brianna, Bryanna is a lot more awkward to say and to spell. Bryanna sort of breaks up the natural flow of Brianna somehow.
