Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Bryce

The name Bryce is derived from a Scottish surname which, in turn, originated as a given name (Brice) from the Middle Ages. The name is thought to come from a Gaulish (Celtic) origin meaning “speckled” (for all those freckled-faced Scots out there?). Surnames were often derived from nicknames that signified personal characteristics, so this is likely the origin. Bryce/Brice is also a Welsh name from “ap + rhys” meaning ‘son of the ardent one.’ If this is not enough for you, then the name could also be derived from an old Celtic adjective meaning ‘alert.’ The name was borne by a 4th century French saint called Brice of Tours. An orphan, Brice was raised by Saint Martin but became vain and ambitious, treating his guardian with much contempt. Martin responded with great patience and kindness, and eventually Brice would remorsefully ask for his forgiveness. He went onto succeed Martin as Bishop of Tours only to revert back to his old ways: neglecting his duties and behaving immorally, so that he was eventually discharged from his post. Exiled to Rome, Brice would repent and completely change his lifestyle. He returned to his old post after seven years in Rome and went onto rule with great humility and holiness and was venerated as a saint by the time of his death.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME BRYCE

Bryce has been in use as a boy’s name in America since 1918, but it did not achieve any significant popularity until the late 1990s. Patiently and with purpose, the name Bryce climbed up the popularity charts for 80 years before landing a spot on the Top 100 list in 1998. In 2003, the name dropped off that list, but still hovers very close. The name is probably a favorite of those American parents of Scottish descent. It’s not exactly the most masculine sounding of names, but it has a certain style all its own. It’s an obvious choice for fair skinned, freckled faced boys, but it also suggests an element of western adventure (think: Bryce Canyon). One caveat: we wouldn’t be surprised to see Bryce on the girl’s charts sometime in the near future given American parent’s penchant for hijacking more androgynous-sounding names from their male counterparts and bestowing them on their little girls (Ron Howard is already guilty of this). In any case, Bryce is a bright and friendly name that conjures up that old Celtic adjective meaning ‘alert.’
