Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Case

Case is either short for Casey or Casen. However, Case could also be considered the transferred use of an English surname which originated as an occupation name. In medieval England a “cas(s)e” would have described a maker of boxes (the word comes from the Latin “capsa” meaning “box”). Casemaker and Case became last names assigned to people who held such occupations; it was a way of identifying citizens for the purposes of taxation after the Norman Conquest and the appearance of the Domesday Book. Case also developed as a rare example of a metronymic surname (passed down through the mother), from the name Cass (a pet form of Cassandra). As a forename, however, Case is very modern and distinct to the United States.

All About the Baby Name – Case

Personality

OF THE BOY NAME CASE

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME CASE

Case first debuted on the American Top 1000 list of masculine names in 2006 and has since climbed up out of the lowest depths of usage. Still not popular or heavily used by any means, Case may have been influenced by R&B singer Case Woodard (who goes only by Case). There’s something about the name Case that just feels incomplete. It sounds better as a naturally given nickname to other names like Casey or Casen, but looks weird as a stand-alone name. We can’t help but to think charity Case, basket Case, head Case, mental Case or space Case – and we’re sure schoolyard kids are thinking the same thing. Case is almost too simple and therefore arguably dull. It’s hip and cool and modern, but that’s about the only “case” we can make for him.
