Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Catriona

Caitrìona is one of several Gaelic forms of Catherine; it’s more the Scottish who have a history of using Caitrìona (whereas the Irish have a history of using Caitlín while the English have traditionally used Katherine). The name was brought to the British Isles in the 11th century by way of the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Norman-French version of Catherine was Cateline, so one is easily able to see how Gaelic speakers formed Caitriona and Caitlin from the same source. The etymology of Catherine is debated, but the earliest derivative of the name is most likely the Greek Hekaterine, stemming from “hekateros” meaning “the far reaching one”, suggesting that Catherine shares her roots with the Greek Titan goddess Hekátē (Hecate). In ancient Greek mythology, the Titans were overthrown by their descendent Olympian gods and goddesses, yet Zeus held Hecate in such high regard, he allowed her to remain and preserve her magical powers over humanity. Mythologies around Hecate vary greatly (as do many ancient legends). See literary references under the name Catherine for more information on Hecate. The “h” in Katerine was added much later in order to connect the name with the Greek “katharos” meaning “pure, clear, innocent”. This Christian-driven folk etymology is apropos given the influence of a 4th century saint, Catherine of Alexandria, Egypt, who was held in high regard among medieval Europeans for her ideals of innocence and purity (see historical references below). Once the Celts were introduced to the cult of St. Catherine of Alexandria, they immediately took to her story and embraced the name. Catriona is one of the more obscure versions of Catherine, mostly isolated to the United Kingdom and Ireland where people of Gaelic ancestry claim interest.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME CATRIONA

Not surprisingly, the lesser known Gaelic version of Catherine, i.e., Catriona, has never seen enough circulation in the United States to land a position on America’s Top 1000 list. Case in point: only nine baby girls born in the United States in 2012 were given the name Catriona. Nine. That’s it. And we’d be willing to guess those nine baby girls can claim at least some Gaelic descent. There are several forms of Catherine available to American parents today – the most popular of which is Katelyn (an Anglicization of the Irish-Gaelic Caitlín). We love this name in all of her beautiful, “far-reaching” forms. One part goddess and two parts saint. What more can you ask for in a name?

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME CATRIONA

Catriona Macgregor Drummond is the title character of Robert Louis Stevenson’s sequel to Kidnapped, a novel published in 1893 called Catriona, (sometimes known as David Balfour, especially in America). In the sequel, David Balfour follows in the political cause of justice for Alan Breck Stewart and James Stewart, who have been erroneously accused of the murder of Colin Roy, the “Red Fox”. He meets Catriona, a bonny Highlands lass, who is the daughter of the very unlikeable James More Drummond. Catriona is an intrepid young woman who engineers her father’s escape from prison by changing places with him. During the course of the quite complicated plot, Catriona and David fall in love, but their path to the fruition of that love is strewn with political intrigue, misunderstandings, familial betrayal, treason, and even another kidnapping. Catriona and David even live together, posing as brother and sister in an attempt to keep a roof over their heads. Through it all, Catriona proves herself to be an eighteenth century forerunner of her more modern sisters, rolling with the punches and landing a few herself. Her reward is marriage to her man and the issue of a couple of healthy children and a long and prosperous life. That seems a decent outcome in any century.
