Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Cayla

Cayla is a variant spelling of Kayla, a name made ultra common in the United States during the 1980s thanks to a popular character named Kayla Brady on the daytime soap opera “Days of Our Lives”. The C version of this name (Cayla) appeared on the American charts for the first time in 1987 (following the success of Kayla). Kayla’s popularity in the U.S. eventually influenced other English-speaking nations to adopt the name in droves (England, Canada, Australia, etc.). Cayla is the much less common spelling and is nowhere near as preferred as Kayla. Largely an American invention, Kayla (and thus Cayla) are coined from the ϋber-popular Kay prefix and the familiar “-la” suffix. It’s a pretty simple name with no true etymology. For the most part, Kayla is the poster child example of the “soap opera” naming trend which took off during the 1980s. The respelling of Cayla just went along for the ride. Separately, Kayla is often considered a transcription of the Yiddish “Kaila” (קַײלָע) meaning “crown of laurel”. In ancient Greek and Roman times, a crown of laurel was rewarded to those who demonstrated supreme achievements in academia and sports, as well as military victory. The laurel crown is also a symbol of martyrdom in Christian tradition.

All About the Baby Name – Cayla

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME CAYLA

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME CAYLA

Cayla first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 1987 but only lasted about 20 years before becoming forgotten. Kayla, however, is still going strong as a Top 100 favorite in America (although definitely not as trendy as she was in the 1990s). Kayla’s success was fast and furious after Kayla Brady was introduced on “Days of Our Lives”; so much so that the name became quickly overused (and parents seem to be tiring of it). It’s no surprise that Cayla appeared suddenly as an alternate spelling since American parents are notoriously fond of spelling modifications. Today Cayla is barely in circulation, though. Seems that her 15 minutes of fame timed out.
