Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Charli

Charli is one of the latest spelling variations of Charlie, which is the English pet form of both Charles and Charlotte (although the Charli spelling whereby the “e” is dropped off the end is used only on girls, mainly in the U.S. and Australia). Charlie, Charlotte, Caroline and Carly are all ultimately derived from the German masculine name Karl/Carl (English: Charles). The Germanic “karl” means “free man” so the feminized Charli would come to mean “free woman”. In ancient times, the Germanic term “karl” signified a “free” man but not one of nobility; i.e., from the same root as the Olde English “ceorl” meaning a “man of low birth, a common man”. In the later Middle High German or Middle English, the terms “karl/carl” evolved its meaning more simply to just “man, fellow, husband”. Despite the rather “lowly” beginnings of this ancient word, many Europeans of high rank bore names derived from Karl/Carl (such as Charlemagne, Charles, Caroline and Charlotte). Charlie has long been used as a unisex pet form, but other spellings have emerged (mostly in America) in an attempt to put a feminized stamp on the name: Charlee, Charleigh, Charley and now Charli.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME CHARLI

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME CHARLI

Charli is the opposite of Charleigh. As elaborate and fanciful as Charleigh attempts to be, Charli goes in the other direction: squarely minimalistic. Charli just appeared on the U.S. charts for the first time in 2010. This may have had something to do with Australian performer Charli Robinson (formerly known as Charli Delaney, born Sharlene). Perhaps American parents picked up this simple spelling from our friends Down Under. Collectively, the “Charlie” names do pretty well in the United States (Charlie, Charlee, Charley, Charli and Charleigh). It’s a very colloquial and informal name laid-back and no-nonsense parents find appealing. Upbeat, friendly, approachable and casual, Charli looks like a nickname, but many people find it perfectly reasonable as a stand-alone given name. The “old-school” traditional parents might want to opt for Charlotte, Charlene or Charlize and consider Charli as a pet form instead.
