Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Cindy

Cindy is the English diminutive of Cynthia, a name that comes from the Greek “kynthia” meaning “woman from Mount Kynthos”. Cynthia was another name (a sort of surname) often used for their mythological goddess Artemis to signify her birthplace on Mount Kynthos on the Greek island of Delos. Artemis (or Cynthia) was a great deity to the Greeks. She was the daughter of Zeus and Leto (or debatably Demeter) and the twin sister of Apollo. She was venerated as the goddess of the hunt, wilderness, children and virginity (her Roman counterpart was Diana). She was often depicted holding a bow and quiver of arrows and could invigorate mortals, cure human sufferings, and protect the young. Artemis was also chaste and virginal who could never be conquered by love. In later tradition, Artemis is associated with Selene (an earlier Greek goddess of the moon). While the name dates back to Antiquity, Cynthia was not a name used in medieval times because of her pagan associations. It was revived during the late Renaissance period (17th century). Cindy developed as a pet form and later became an independently given name in its own right mainly in North America, sometimes in reference to Cinderella. Cindy is also sometimes considered a pet form of Lucinda.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME CINDY

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME CINDY

As an independently given name, Cindy debuted on the American charts for the first time in 1938. The name climbed the charts pretty quickly and became a Top 100 favorite in 1953. Cindy’s peak success came during the 1950s and 60s reaching her highest position ever when she ranked #19 most popular girl’s name in America in 1957. Cindy started to decline in usage during the 1970s, but went into more of a freefall at the turn of the 21st century. No longer stylish, Cindy is used with relatively low levels of moderation today. Cindy is a fairly “cutesy” name that conjures up the youngest, pig-tailed daughter from “The Brady Bunch” or the irresistible Cindy Lou Who from “The Grinch Who Stole Christmas”. Of course, gorgeous supermodel Cindy Crawford helps to off-set this a bit (although her birth name is Cynthia). As a stand-alone given name, Cindy is a much more casual and less sophisticated choice for parents who prefer simplicity to flowery. The other thing we’d point out: Cindy is a name that has inspired scores of songs by well-known artists, so she definitely has something going for her!
