Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Corban

Corban is a masculine name with two possible etymologies. For one, it could be a slight variation on the Hebrew word “korban” (קָרְבָּן) used to describe the ancient ritual of animal sacrifices to God or an offering/gift of some kind symbolizing the act of man coming back to God. Alternately, Corban could also be a slight variation of Corbin, an old Anglo-Norman surname derived from a nickname. The word “corb” meant “crow, raven” and was usually bestowed upon a man with shiny black hair or one with a raucous tone of voice (see the name Corbin for more detail). Either way, Corban is a pretty new name and appears mainly restricted to the United States and Australia.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME CORBAN

Corban is brand-spanking new to the American Top 1000 list of male names. First appearing in 2011 at position #986 on the charts, Corban has barely any time under his belt to prove his staying power. While Corbin and Korbin have both been in circulation for well over 10 years, Corban with an “a” is much more new to the game. We’re not sure if parents are choosing this name for its “sacrificial” importance to God or if they’re just playing around with the spelling of Corbin. We can’t help but to think of potential brother names Abraham and Isaac since it was Abraham who offered the ultimate sacrificial to God in Genesis 22: his son Isaac.
