Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Cortez

Cortez is a Spanish surname derived from the French “corteis” meaning “refined, accomplished”; the surname originated as a nickname for a man of good education and refinement. The English masculine name Curtis comes from the same etymological source. Fernando Cortés was an early 16th century Spanish Conquistador who overthrew the Aztec Empire, defeated their leader Moctezuma and conquered much of Mexico on behalf of Spain. Cortés discovered the Baja California peninsula and so the Gulf of California (a body of water between the peninsula and mainland Mexico) was originally named the Sea of Cortés in 1539. Cortez is a common surname in the United States owing to the large Hispanic-American population. As a first name Cortez has been in use since the 1970s in America. It doesn’t appear to be used as a forename in any other country.

All About the Baby Name – Cortez

Personality

OF THE BOY NAME CORTEZ

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME CORTEZ

Cortez showed up on the American Top 1000 list in 1882 but didn’t reappear again until 1972. The name went as high as #533 on the charts in 1990 (low-moderate usage) and has since fallen from favor. Today Cortez is dangerously close to dropping off the Top 1000 list as he nears the bottom of the charts. Spanish surnames aren’t as prevalent in the United States as Anglo-Saxon, Irish or Scottish surnames are so it’s pretty remarkable this name even appears on the top 1000 list at all. In fact, Cortez is one of the few Spanish surnames on the list period (the most popular being Cruz). As a result, Cortez is an exotic, interesting "refined" choice for American parents.
