Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Cory

Cory is a variant spelling of Corey. Corey is the transferred use of a Scottish surname (although also found in Ireland) recorded as Corey, Corrie or Corry which itself is derived from a place name. The name is said to come from the Gaelic word “coire” which means “cauldron” which would have been used to describe a topographical feature of the location’s landscape (making it more distinguishable). In this case, the “cauldron” would signify a circular hanging valley on a mountaintop. Alternately, the name is said to come from an Old Norse personal name “Kóri” of uncertain meaning (although some say “curly-haired”). The word “cor” also means “heart” in Latin. As a given name, Corey became popularized for little boys in the latter half of the 20th century throughout the English speaking countries. Today, Corey is still ranked relatively high as a masculine personal name in Northern Ireland and Scotland. Cory is less popular. Both names are primarily used on little boys, but they are widely considered unisex in the United States.

Spending time alone comes easily to Sevens, as it gives them time to contemplate philosophical, religious and spiritual ideas in an effort to find "real truth".  Sevens are wise, but often exude mystery as if they are tapped into something the rest of us don't understand. They love the outdoors and are fed by nature. Sevens are constantly seeking to understand human nature, our place in the universe, and the mystery of life in general. Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME CORY

Cory is not as popular as the Corey spelling in America. The name Corey first appeared on the masculine naming charts in 1949 followed by Cory in 1951. Cory also appeared on the American female naming charts between the years 1972 and 1990, but has since disappeared. In other words, although the name has had a gender-neutral history in the U.S., Corey/Cory is primarily considered masculine within most English speaking nations. Cory has always trailed the spelling of Corey in popularity, although Cory has done remarkable well on the charts in his own right. The height of Cory’s usage was between 1975 and 1993 when it managed to achieve Top 100 status (reaching its highest point on the charts at position #59 in 1988). In the past 20 years, however, Cory has been on a more significant backwards trajectory down the charts. The name is only used with the lightest of moderation now. We see Cory as a cool, relaxed, even casual name. It’s not super sophisticated, but rather informal and sporty.
