Cyrus

Cyrus has consistently maintained a position on the American male naming charts for well over a century. We assume it’s been around since colonization (due to the Puritan influence), but we only have government data going back to the 1880s. In any case, the name was mildly popular in the late 19th century, but throughout the 20th century, this name saw a slow and steady decline. In fact, Cyrus came dangerously close to falling off the charts altogether by the mid-1970s. Fortunately for Cyrus, American parents started taking an interest again in lesser-known Biblical names starting in the 1990s (Ethan, Elijah, Caleb, Gideon). Now that we’ve entered the 21st century, Cyrus is by no means a popular name, but his station on the charts appears to be improving. He remains uncommon and underused which is good news for parents who abhor hyper-trendy monikers. Cyrus is a wonderful name with a lot of understated appeal. It’s at once ancient yet modern. Familiar yet unconventional. Neglected yet original. “Lordly” yet friendly. It has a cool-quality X factor and Cy is a simple, perfect nickname.
