Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Dalia

Dalia is a name with three possible meanings. For one, Dalyah is the Hebrew (דַּלְיָה) word for “flowering branch”, such as the tip of a grapevine or olive branch. Secondly, Dahlia is the national flower of Mexico named after Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. Dal is the Swedish word for “valley” and the Dahlia is sometimes referred to as the “valley flower”. Prized for their beauty, the dahlia flowers typically symbolize dignity and elegance, but also eternal commitment (and are therefore often used in weddings). Finally, the name Dalia also comes from Baltic Mythology as the goddess of fate (Dalia means “luck, fate” in Lithuanian). The goddess Dalia was mainly concerned with material wealth and the proper distribution thereof. She had the power to give and take material goods and property as she saw fit. As a female given name, Dalia seems to be a late 20th century coinage.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME DALIA

Dalia first appeared on the U.S. female naming charts in 1994. We were surprised to see this name enter the charts at a high position of #485 right off the bat. Ironically, Dalia’s very first year ever on the charts was also her best performance. The name has only experienced backwards momentum since her initial debut. We think the name was popularized by a Spanish telenovela character introduced in 1994, a role played by Mexican actress Yolanda Andrade in the Mexican soap opera Buscando el Paraiso. Today Dalia has basically returned to obscurity and is a name used with very low frequency. Dahlia is the preferred spelling of Dalia in the United States now.
