Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Damarion

Damarion is a modern African-American name invention. The Civil Right Movement in America marked a shift in Black naming traditions. In celebration of their own distinct identity, African-Americans began to look at new and creative ways to name their babies. A few different styles began to emerge in the 1970s whereby traditional Western names were altered in spelling and pronunciation, Arabic names were adopted in honor of the Islamic faith, African names were rediscovered and new names were created which blended the Old World with the New World. The name Damarion is basically one evolution of this process. In the late 1960s, Blacks adopted the name Jamal from the Arabic language (meaning “beauty”). That name eventually blended into Jamar (inspired by Lamar). Jamari became an elaboration of Jamar in the 1990s and finally Jamarion showed up on the charts in 2003 as an even more fanciful form of the name. Damarion is basically an off-shoot of this creative naming process.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DAMARION

Damarion first appeared on the U.S. male naming charts in 2003 (the same year as Jamarion). It’s not to say that Damarion hasn’t been used prior to this date, but now it’s being used with enough regularity to make the Top 1000 list of American boy name. In his first couple years on the charts, Damarion climbed over 400 positions and got as high as #562 on the Top 1000 list in 2005. In more recent years, however, Damarion is retreating back down to lower levels of usage. Although virtually every other ethnicity in America has joined the movement of outright name inventions, Damarion remains distinctly African-American.
