Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Daniela

Daniela is a Latinate feminine form of the male name Daniel. The name Daniel comes from the Hebrew word “daniy'el” which translates to “God is my judge.” The name is borne of the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament – he is a prophet whose story is told in the Book of Daniel. Daniel was a Jewish slave in the city of Babylon to the Assyrian king Nebuchadnezzar about 600 years before Christ. Daniel gains favor with the king through his ability to interpret dreams. He is later thrown into a lion’s den by his enemies, only to be saved by an angel of God who held the lions’ mouths shut to prevent Daniel’s death. This particular Biblical story became popular in the Middle Ages and was often depicted in “miracle plays” which gave the name further prominence. Daniela is the spelling preferred in Italian and Spanish-speaking countries as well as the eastern European and Slavic countries. The French use Danielle and English-speaking countries tend to use Daniella (with two “L”s). Daniela was the 5th most popular girl’s name in Spain (2009).
