Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Danna

Danna is probably an altered spelling of the more traditional unisex name Dana. An etymological study of the name Dana is rather multifaceted. Some consider it the feminized version of the name Dane, indicating people who are from Denmark. It may also be related to the name Daniel, a Hebrew name meaning “God is my judge” (as a feminized pet form). Further, the name “dana” in Arabic means ‘pearl’ and the name Dana (or Danah) is used for girls in the Arab world. It is mainly our belief, however, that the name Dana is derived from Celtic mythology and one of the oldest names in Celtic tradition. The goddess Dana, also called Danu, was the Mother Goddess in Celtic Mythology who is associated with power, generosity and knowledge. The Gaelic word “dána” means ‘brave, daring.’ Alternately, in Japan a “danna” was the traditional word for the patron of an established geisha. In Japanese, the word “danna” is usually associated with either ‘master’ or ‘husband’. There is also an old Palestinian town called Danna and an island in western Scotland, too.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME DANNA

The number Seven personality is deeply mystical and highly in tune with their spirituality. They operate on a different wavelength than the average joe. Spending time alone comes easily to Sevens, as it gives them time to contemplate philosophical, religious and spiritual ideas in an effort to find "real truth".  Sevens are wise, but often exude mystery as if they are tapped into something the rest of us don't understand. They love the outdoors and are fed by nature. Sevens are constantly seeking to understand human nature, our place in the universe, and the mystery of life in general. This makes them quite artistic and poetic, but they are also keen observers with high intellect - so they are equally scientific-minded. Sevens are charitable and care deeply about the human condition.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME DANNA

The name Danna popped onto the U.S. naming charts for girls in 1944. It’s not clear what prompted the name’s appearance on the charts, but it was never heavily used (compared to Dana). In fact, in 1977 the name disappeared from the American popularity charts altogether and would not reemerge for 25 years. Danna resurfaced again in 2002. This time, she appears to be showing some promise. The name has advanced over 700 spots up the charts in less than 10 years. Again, it’s not clear what’s influencing the sudden re-usage of this name. Unlike Dana (which is usually pronounced either DAY-na or DAN-a), it seems clear that Danna would only be pronounced DAN-na – giving her a stronger more masculine sensibility. This name is cool, confident and different – and yet it still feels familiar.
