Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Darrell

Apparently Darrell started out as an English surname, borrowed from the Norman-French “d’Airelle” which indicated a person from Airelle, France (formally located in Calvados, Normandy). “Airelle” is the French word for “huckleberry”. The first recorded spelling of this surname appeared in the early 13th century rendered as “Darell”. Usage of Darrell as a first name dates back to the 19th century and was most popular in the 20th century. It is no longer a heavily used name among English speakers today.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DARRELL

Darrell is an example of a name which has come and gone out of style. It appeared on the male naming charts in the late 1800s with fairly rare usage. As the 20th century got underway, it became clear that Darrell was on the rise. The name gradually increased on the charts until securing a Top 100 position in 1954 where he hovered until 1970. Darrell and his brother Darryl are names associated with the 1950s and 60s and therefore lack 21st century style. It’s also considered a unisex name (thanks to actress Daryl Hannah) which may have caused parents to lose some interest in Darrell for their baby boys. Although out-dated by today’s naming standards, there are still a few hundred parents who keep this name alive on the charts. One thing we’ve heard, though, is that a “darrell” is a negative term used in reference to a loser or “derelict”. Most parents aren't bothered by such silly nonsense, but we thought it was worth mentioning.
