Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Davon

Davon is an African-American inspiration, likely derived from Davin which is typically considered the combination of the names David and Devin. David is an ancient Hebrew name borne from the Bible as one of Israel’s greatest kings. His story is told with great clarity in the first two books of Samuel when Samuel anoints David as the second king of Israel, and which includes the great story of “David and Goliath” whereby the young David kills the great Goliath with a slingshot (symbolizing Israel’s struggles with pagans and/or Satan). The most accepted etymology of David’s name comes from the Hebrew “dawid” meaning “beloved”. Alternately, Devin is an Irish-Gaelic name most likely derived from Damhán (little fawn). We have also read (but are unable to confirm) that Davin has roots in Scandinavia meaning “shining, bright” in reference to the Finns (i.e., pride of the Finnish people). We do know the Old Norse word for “hope” is “vón” (one could thus argue that Davon means “hopeful”). There is also a good chance that Davon mimics other stylistic favorites within the African-American community, such as Javon and Trevon.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DAVON

Davon has been in circulation in the United States since 1977 (following Davin which appeared in 1969). Davion soon followed in 1991. Davon saw pretty quick success and reached his peak popularity nationwide at position #403 in 1994. Given that this name was primarily restricted to the African-American population (~14%), this was quite an impressive showing! Not only that, but Davon showed extreme success in Washington D.C. and Maryland in the late 1980s up through the mid 1990s (not surprisingly, these states have among the highest per capital concentration of Black Americans). Unfortunately, since the later 1990s up through today, Davon has lost his fashionable edge and it no longer a top choice among African-Americans.
