Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Deangelo

Generally rendered as DeAngelo or De’Angelo, this is a name invented within the African-American community of the United States during the 1970s. The name is a product of the popular “De” prefix married with the Italian masculine name Angelo. Angelo comes from the Medieval Latin “Angelus” which stood for a heavenly creature – an angel – itself originating from the Greek word αγγελος (angelos) meaning "messenger" (since the biblical angels were usually messengers of God). Obviously a popular figure in Christianity, the angel gave birth to several variations of its name. The Spanish use Ángel, the Greeks use Angelos, the Czechs use Anděl and in the Basque country they say Aingeru. African-Americans put their own stamp on this little cherub, too. DeAngelo basically means “of the angels”. A fitting moniker for any angelic baby boy.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DEANGELO

DeAngelo first appeared on masculine naming charts in the United States in 1975. After the Civil Rights Movement followed by an atmosphere of Black Power, the 1970s really marked the decade when African-Americans began controlling their own distinct naming practices as reclamation of identity. Black names took on many new forms and were based in various etymologies, from Arabic names in keeping with Islamic beliefs, to Swahili names in a nod to Africa, to alterations of popular American names and, finally, to downright inventions. DeAngelo follows a particular trend of other “De-“ names (DeAndre, DeMarcus, DeShawn, etc). Yet we have to say DeAngelo is one of our favorites because it sweetly means “of the angels”. DeAngelo reached his peak popularity on the charts at position #453 in 1989. Not a super high number, but pretty impressive considering it’s a name generally restricted to parents representing roughly 15% of the American population. Today the name DeAngelo has fallen from its once heavenly heights and is now a low ranking name even within the community that birthed it.
