Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Demarcus

Demarcus or DeMarcus is an African-American name first coined in the 1970s. This may have been influenced by the adoption of Demetrius as a name choice. Adding on the “De-“ prefix to masculine names became a widespread trend within the African-American community as evidenced by names like DeAndre, DeAngelo, DeMarcus, DeMarion and DeShawn. “De” is the common Latin word for “of” so DeMarcus could be said to mean “of Marcus”. Marcus is the original Latin form of the name Mark, and it’s one of the oldest, most successful of all ancient Roman forenames. In fact, back in antiquity and the classical era, Marcus was one of only a dozen or so praenomens (i.e., first names) used for boys. In the 2nd century Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius, considered a philosopher-king and symbolizing much of what was good about Roman civilization, was the last of the “Five Good Emperors”. The etymological origin of the name is not certain. It likely comes from one of two places. The first is Mars, the Roman god of war. The second is from the Latin adjective “mas” meaning “male, virile” which is thematically similar to the war god Mars. In more modern times, Marcus became a favorite among African-Americans, perhaps influenced by pro-Black Nationalist orator Marcus Garvey.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DEMARCUS

The boy’s name DeMarcus debuted on America’s Top 1000 list in 1974 and saw pretty quick circulation within the Black community. The height of the name’s popularity came in 1988 at position #430 on the charts. Although this may not seem impressive at first glance, it is actually quite remarkable given DeMarcus is almost exclusively restricted to African-Americans in terms of usage (roughly 14% of the U.S. population). In the ten years between 1988 and 1998, DeMarcus was on the Top 100 list of favorite baby boy names in Mississippi (the state with the highest concentration of African-Americans after the District of Columbia). Although DeMarcus has mostly been trending downwards since the 1990s, the name did get a little boost in 2005 and 2006 probably owing to the “dynamic” defensive football player DeMarcus Ware who was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 2005. Adding more athletic currency to this name is talented basketball player DeMarcus Cousins who was the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NBA draft. DeMarcus is a very “manly, virile” name true to its etymological origins, but one with its own ethnic flair.
