Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Dimitri

Dimitri is the cosmopolitan blend of French and Russian. The Slavic form of the name is typically spelled Dmitri(y) and, like Ivan, Sacha, Vladimir and Yuri, we think of this one as quintessentially Russian (Дмитрий). The Slavs adopted the name from the Greek Δημητριος (Dēmētrios) meaning “follower of Demeter”. Demeter was one of the great ancient Greek divinities – she was the earth mother who presided over the grains and fertility and is often referred to as the goddess of the harvest. The name Demeter comes from the Greek δε (de) "earth" and μητηρ (meter) "mother". However, what really popularized the name Demetrius in medieval Europe was a revival interest in an early 4th century Greek saint named Demetrius. Saint Demetrius was often depicted alongside St. George as one of the patron saints of the Crusades (a series of religious wars from the 11th to 13th centuries whereby European Christians attempted to recapture access to the Holy Lands from invading and occupying Muslims). Demetrius was greatly revered as a military martyr during a time of Christian persecution under the rule of Roman Emperor Diocletian which is why he was invoked during the Crusades. Saint Demetrius became particularly popular in the Eastern Orthodox Church and among the Slavic people specifically. The name Dmitri has had a long and successful career in Russia, for instance. In terms of Western Europeans, the French are the main admirers of charming Dmitri and adopted the name for themselves in the form of Dimitri. Dmitry remains a hugely common name in Russia, but Dimitri sees impressive circulation in France, as well. In Greece, Dimitrios is a Top 3 pick for baby boys and Dimitar is a Top 10 in Bulgaria.

They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DIMITRI

Dimitri is a super Russian sounding name to most Americans, and since Russian-Americans only make up about 1% of the U.S. population, we can see parents of other ethnic heritage are also drown to this cosmopolitan charmer (as were the French). The name first appeared on the American male naming charts in 1989 right as the Soviet Union’s communist economy collapsed (which brought a wave of Russian immigration to the U.S. during the 1990s). Dimitri saw some immediate adoption in terms of usage (although only light to moderate), and then the name saw another little jump in 1997 following the release of Disney’s animated feature film “Anastasia” in which John Cusack does the voice-over for the character Dimitri (Anastasia’s mutual love interest). Dimitri has since seen declining usage and is now residing at the very bottom of the Top 1000 list – barely hanging on at this point. Good news for parents looking for an exotic, underused name choice for their baby boys. Russian names will always carry a touch of mystery thanks to the “Iron Curtain” days gone past, but the richness of Russia’s cultural history brings a certain sophistication to all Russian names. Dimitri in particular is handsome and debonair, and the Russian pet form (Mitya) is too cute for words.
