Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Draven

Draven is a poster-child example of how pop-culture influences can impact the usage of a name basically overnight. Draven is a name taken from a 1994 action-film called “The Crow” (based on a 1989 comic book series created by James O’Barr). With the help of a crow, the film’s main protagonist, Eric Draven, is resurrected from the dead and spends the course of the movie avenging the brutal death of his girlfriend. The gang-leader of the “bad guys” is named T-Bird (see the bird theme here?). The last name of our hero, Draven, was added for the movie and was not an original part of the comic series. Draven quite obviously is a play on words; as in D’Raven (“of the raven”) since Eric Draven’s mystical strength and knowledge is derived from the crow (all ravens are crows but not all crows are ravens). Aside from the name’s connection to “The Crow”, Draven is an actual Anglo-Saxon surname derived from the Olde English word “drǽfend” meaning “hunter” (also apropos since Eric Draven “hunts” the killers of his girlfriend/fiancé). Given the dark subject matter of the movie, and the name’s clear connection to the raven, many people consider Draven a rather gothic and macabre name choice. We would disagree, however (see the name “Raven” for more information on the bird’s symbolic importance). Draven is a name used only in the United States.

OF THE BOY NAME DRAVEN

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME DRAVEN

The name Draven debuted on the American masculine charts in 1995, right on the heels of the movie “The Crow” which was released in 1994. While the name has remained on the charts for almost 20 years now, it has generally lingered at lower levels of usage. We can also say with confidence that it’s fathers rather than mothers selecting this name for their sons. And we can’t say we blame all the men out there who have found Eric Draven to be a favorite protagonist and hero –he’s dark, he’s loyal, he’s brave, he’s an all around bad-ass. Plus the name’s connection to ravens and hunters adds further dimension to the name’s appeal. Draven’s not a name for everybody – it does carry some weighty qualities. We agree it’s rather Gothic and gloomy, but we also appreciate the “darker” side of the human condition and psyche. And parents drawn to this specific name aren’t all unicorns and rainbows, which we understand! Draven is also a Number One in numerology which is a take-charge kind of person. Coincidence? We think not.
