Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Dulce

Dulce is the Spanish word for ‘sweet, candy’. We know this name was in use during the Middle Ages because it was borne by Dulce I of León (a northwestern medieval kingdom on the Iberian Peninsula). Her sister was named Sancha (which means ‘saintly’). Sweet and Saintly – how cute is that? Although their father (Alfonso IX of León) tried to will the kingdom to his daughters after his death in the 13th century, female heirs were not recognized by the people and so this failed. Dulce is not a particularly popular female name, although it seems to appear throughout all Spanish and Portuguese speaking countries. It’s similar to English speaking people naming their daughter Candy.
