Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Effie

Effie comes to us from a couple different directions. For one, it’s the old English diminutive of the Greek Euphemia. In this case, Effie would come to mean “speaks well” from the Greek elements “eu” (ευ) meaning “good” and “phemi” (φημι) meaning “to speak”. Euphemia was a name resurrected by medieval Christians in homage to an earlier 4th century saint, commonly referred to as “The Great Martyr Euphemia”, who was martyred in the Roman city of Chalcedon (modern day Turkey) around 304 A.D. After refusing to worship the Greek pagan god of war (Ares), Euphemia joined other Christians in hiding so that they could freely worship in their own faith. Once discovered they were all subjected to tortuous punishment, but Euphemia was especially singled out. Apparently she was killed by a wild bear in front of spectators in an arena (those ancient Romans sure did know how to afflict cruel and unusual punishment!). In any case, a church was built over her grave and, about 150 years later (after the Roman Empire had converted to Christianity), a theological council met at Euphemia’s cathedral in Chalcedon to settle a doctrinal issue. The disagreement was settled by Euphemia, actually. The Church men placed two scrolls in her tomb – each professing their respective faith of the issue – and, after three days, the tomb was open. Miraculously, Euphemia held one of the scrolls – the “true” one – in her right hand while the other – the false one – lay at her feet. The issue was settled. Stories of such miracles became widespread in medieval times and cults grew up around those saints who had particularly interesting legends attached to them. As a result, Euphemia became a common baptismal name especially within the Eastern Orthodox Church in the Middle Ages. The name was anglicized to a pet form of Effie in England. Aside from Effie’s connection to the early saint, Effie is also considered the anglicized form of Oighrig which is an old Scottish-Gaelic female name meaning “speckled baby” which was used to describe a little freckled one. Lastly, it could be argued that Effie is also a short form for any female name beginning with the letter F such as Frances, Fatima or Faith.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME EFFIE

Effie was actually quite popular for baby girls born in the United States during the late 19th century and early 20th. In fact, she was a Top 100 favorite choice between 1880 and 1902. The name slowly but steadily fell from fashion as the decades progressed into the 20th century until she fell completely out of circulation in 1959. Effie has yet to return to the charts despite the fact the name was used by author Suzanne Collins in her highly successful young adult trilogy “The Hunger Games”. Effie Trinket is indeed a “trinket” of The Capitol; a rather ridiculous character with bright pink hair and a penchant for etiquette. Still, Ms. Collins couldn’t help but to make her a likable character (and we certainly prefer her name over Katniss). The popular book (and film) series did nothing to revive usage of Effie on the American charts. This one is an old-fashioned charmer, having demonstrated clear style and popularity over 100 years ago. And even though these turn-of-the-century “old lady” names are the height of fashion right now, Effie doesn’t seem to make the cut. Yet she reminds us of Annie, Bessie, Minnie, Elsie, Lillie, Nellie, Mattie, Hattie, Jessie, Willie, Fannie, Maggie, Susie, Sadie, Nettie, Lottie and Sallie – all of these names, too, were Top 100 picks in 1900.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME EFFIE

Effie Trinket is a character in The Hunger Games , a 2008 science fiction novel by Suzanne Collins, which also made its way into a popular 2012 movie with Elizabeth Banks in the part of Effie. In this post-apocalyptic landscape, Effie is a Capitol Administrator for the District 12 participants in the Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta. Our Effie takes her position very seriously; she wants her District to win, and will do everything in her prim and pink way to ensure such an outcome. She is almost refreshingly enthusiastic about what amounts to a violent hunt to the death, seemingly viewing it as entertainment, pure and simple, for which she has a responsibility. As the games progress, however, it is clear that Effie is growing fond of her young charges, and is beside herself with happiness at their “successes”. As she herself so eloquently puts it: "Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!"
