Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Elaina

Elaina is a Latinized elaboration of Elaine which is the Old French form of Helen, originating from the Greek Hēlēnē, the name of the famous beauty of the Trojan War story in Greek mythology. There are two possible etymologies for this Greek name. One, it’s a form of “hēlios” which is the Greek word for ‘sun’ so Helen is thought to mean ‘ray or sunbeam.’ Secondly, it could be the Greek word for “Greek” (Hellēn) but this is not widely held (think: Hellenistic culture of ancient Greece). Given the legendary beauty of Helen of Troy (the face that could launch a thousand ships), a sunbeam or ray of light seems much more fitting. (For more information, see the name Helen.) In any case, this ancient name of Greek origin produced many variations throughout Europe such as Helen, Hélѐne, Ellen, Elaine, Eleanor, Ella and even Nell.

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME ELAINA

Romance is the hallmark of the Six personality. They exude nurturing, loving, and caring energy. Sixes are in love with the idea of love in its idealized form - and with their magnetic personalities, they easily draw people toward them. Like the number Two personality, they seek balance and harmony in their life and the world at large. They are conscientious and service-oriented, and a champion for the underdog. These personalities naturally attract money and are usually surrounded by lovely material objects - but their human relationships are always primary. They thrive in giving back to others rather than being motivated by their own desires. This is when they achieve great things. Sixes are natural teachers, ministers and counselors.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ELAINA

Elaina first appeared on the American female naming charts in 1964 but has pretty much languished at low levels of popularity. However, as we’ve crossed the threshold into this new century, things appear to be looking brighter for this little ‘sunbeam’. Elaina has now reached levels of light to low moderation. This is definitely not a trendy name and it’s a prettier, more delicate version of the two-syllable Elaine. Currently in America, the Spanish version of Helen (Elena) is the most popular of the “Helen” names, followed by the French and English Eleanor (which possibly has other etymological roots in the Germanic rather than Greek languages). Elaina is pretty much the third favorite and currently more popular than Helen herself. Ellen and Eileen have become outdated compared to the more fanciful Elaina. She follows the trend of adding that delicately feminine “-a” on the end of names (Anna is more popular than Anne, Julia is more popular than Julie, Isabella is more popular than Isabelle, and so on). Elaina is a lovely name, and quite underused. It’s got that old-fashioned attraction and it’s just ultra-feminine.
