Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Elise

Élise is the French pet form of the name Elisabeth. The name developed into an individually given name in its own right and spread to English speaking countries by the late 19th century (where the accent on the first syllable is dropped). The name Elizabeth has been around since the Middle Ages, mainly popularized by the French (using the spelling Elisabeth). The name is most notably borne in the Bible by the mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57). The name is essentially Greek (Elisabet) from the Hebrew (Elisheva) meaning “God is my oath.” Elisabeth became popularized by the French during the late medieval period as a given name, mostly influenced by two saints – St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Elizabeth of Portugal. Eventually several pet forms and nicknames were developed and the French Élise is one example of this. The name was ranked #54 in France (2007) and an impressive #7 in Belgium (2008).

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ELISE

The name Elise has been in use in America since at least 1880 (when the U.S. government first began tracking naming trends). While the name has only enjoyed moderate to low usage, it has nonetheless maintained constant use for well over 100 years. This alone is an impressive achievement. The name has never reached a position on the Top 100 list of most favored girl’s names in the United States, but it is hitting the height of its popularity right now. The name just managed to claim a spot on the Top 200 list, its highest point ever. We are glad to see this, too. Elise is pretty and modern despite its connection to the ancient name Elisabeth. It reminds of some other lovely French female names (Denise, Louise and Thérѐse). They are sophisticated without being flashy or annoyingly trendy. Elise is a simple, two-syllable, elegant name. And the French were quite creative with their pet forms and nicknames. Not only did they give us Élise out of Elisabeth, but also Babette, Elsa, Lise and Lisette. Mais Élise est la plus jolie nom de tous. Merci!
