Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Elyse

Elyse is one of the many English diminutives of Elizabeth. The name Elizabeth has been around since the Middle Ages, mainly popularized by the French (using the spelling Elisabeth). Its widespread usage is owed mainly to Elizabeth from the Christian New Testament; the name was borne by the mother of John the Baptist (Luke 1:57). The name is essentially Hebrew in origin (Elisheva) and means “God is my oath.” See the Elizabeth name page for more detail. The 13th and 14th century saints Elizabeth of Hungary and Elizabeth of Portugal also helped cement a healthy regard for this name during precarious medieval times when naming children after venerable saints was a widespread trend (really, a protective measure). Once Elizabeth became established as a super common name, pet forms became more necessary to distinguish among the many Elizabeths. In fact, Elizabeth has birthed more diminutives and pet forms than perhaps any other name: Babette, Bess, Bessie, Beth, Betsy, Bette, Betty, Buffy, Eliza, Ella, Ellie, Elsa, Elsie, Elyse, Libby, Liddy, Lilibet, Lillian, Lisa, Lise, Liz, Liza, Lizbeth, Lizette and Lizzie. And that’s just a partial list! Of course all of these colloquial forms of Elizabeth eventually morphed into independently given names in their own right over time. Elyse is an example of this.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ELYSE

Elyse first achieved a position on America’s Top 1000 list of baby girl names in 1944; although back then the name didn’t climb very far. In 1957 Elyse retreated back into the shadows of obscurity and remained off the charts for about 25 years. The name reemerged on the Top 1000 list in 1983, but this time she soared upwards. Why the sudden interest? A new sitcom debuted at the end of 1982 called “Family Ties” which would eventually reach over 25 million households. The mother of the family, Elyse Keaton (played by Meredith Baxter-Birney), is the independent, ex-hippie, “cool” mom to the ultra conservative teenaged son, Alex P. Keaton (played by a young Michael J. Fox). So millions of Americans were reminded of Elyse and re-embraced it as a name to use (at least for a little while). During the 1990s, Elyse headed back down the charts. Today she’s hovering around the lower half of the Top 1000 but she also has a fair amount of competition with other Elizabeth-inspired names (especially the French spelling of Elise). Elyse remains a lovely name choice. It’s just getting lost in the mix right now.
