Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Emmett

Emmett originated as a metronymic surname from the diminutive form of the female given name Emma. We arrived at the name Emma after a lengthy evolution through time, beginning with medieval versions of ancient Germanic names such as Ermintrude and Irmengarde. These names were later shorted to Irma, Irmen or Ermen; which is the German word for “universal, entire, whole”. The name later evolved to the feminine form of Hemma and was first introduce to Britain by Viking conquerors that came to England via northern France (Normandy). In the 11th century, Hemma, daughter of Richard Duke of Normandy, would marry the King of England (Ӕthelred the Unready) and further popularize the name among the English. The first recorded spelling of the surname showed up in the 14th century as Emmot. As a given name, Emmett has been around for well over a hundred years.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME EMMETT

The name Emmett has maintained a spot on the U.S. popularity charts since the U.S. government began tracking naming trends in 1880. Back then, the name was a Top 200 favorite. However, as the 20th century progressed, the name began to wane in usage. Emmett saw the low-point of his popularity by the 1980s when he almost fell off the list and into obscurity forever. Probably thanks to the Dallas Cowboy’s football star Emmitt Smith, the name started to show signs of recovery in the mid to late 1990s. Today the name hasn’t quite rebounded to the levels of its success it enjoyed at the turn of the last century, but it is making a mark again. Emmett is a great name with a lot going for it. It’s been around since at least the 19th century which gives it an old-school, gentlemanlike quality. And yet at the same time it’s refreshingly modern, masculine and strong. With its ‘universal’ meaning, we’re not surprised that Emmett covers so many bases and appeals to us in so many ways. Thanks to Emmitt Smith, we also can’t help thinking of an athlete of heroic proportions.
