Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Etta

Etta originated as a pet name for Henrietta (the English equivalent of the French Henriette), which are the female versions of Henry and Henri, respectively, coined in the 17th century (although the English typically preferred Harriet over Henrietta). The name Henry (and thus Henrietta) comes from the Germanic elements “haim” (home) and “rīc” (ruler), literally translating to “ruler of the house”. The name was original rendered as Heimerich in Old High German which the French eventually borrowed as Henri. The Norman-French spread the name throughout England after the Conquest of 1066 (although the Anglo-Saxons originally adopted the name as “Harry”). It wasn’t until after the Middle Ages when the female forms of Harry/Henry came into popular usage (Harriet, Henrietta). By the 19th century, Etta was an independently given name in her own right (just as Hattie developed from Harriet). Aside from Etta’s original association with Henrietta, it is also widely considered a pet form of any name ending with the “-etta” suffix (Loretta, Rosetta) as was the case with African-American R&B singer Etta James (b. Jamesetta Hawkins in 1938).

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME ETTA

Etta was surprisingly popular over 100 years ago. Our available name statistics only dates back to 1880, which also happened to be her best year ever on the charts at position #72 out of 1000 baby girl names. By the turn of the 20th century, Etta was no longer a Top 100 favorite but she still enjoyed moderately strong distribution. However, the name would die a slow death as the years progressed into last century, and by 1967 Etta dropped off America’s Top 1000 list altogether. In 2012, Etta was bestowed on just fewer than 130 baby girls which wasn’t enough to land a spot on our charts. Although we are glad to see she’s still in circulation. It’s a cool, crisp name with a distinct jazziness thanks to the singer Etta James. Underused and ignored right now, Etta is a great choice for parents seeking something short and simple, yet strong and confident.
