Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Evelynn

Evelynn is just Evelyn with one more “n”. Evelyn probably developed from “Eibhlín” (pronounced ev-len) which is the Gaelic rendering of the Germanic name Aveline, from the element “avi” believed to mean “desired”. The Norman-French were responsible for bringing the name Aveline to the British Isles by way of the 1066 Conquest where it rapidly transformed into Evelyn. Evelyn started out as a surname in England and then developed into a given name for both boys and girls (think: English novelist Evelyn Waugh). Originally Evelyn was far more common as a masculine name. Today the reverse is true. Adding that extra “n” to Evelynn certainly confirms its femininity. Regardless, the traditional spelling of Evelyn is a Top 25 most favorite name in the United States (and a Top 100 in Canada, Australia and England/Wales).
