Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Everett

Everett is the transferred use of an English surname originating from the ancient Germanic personal name Eberhard from the elements “eber” meaning ‘wild boar’ and “hard” meaning ‘brave, hardy’. The Olde English form of this personal name was Eoforheard, and after the Norman Conquest in the 11th century, the name would intermix with the French version and morphed into Everard. This was a name particularly popular among the Bretons (from Brittany, France) who would join William the Conqueror’s fight against the English and were duly rewarded with land grants. As a given name, Everett has been popular since the 19th century.

OF THE BOY NAME EVERETT

The name Everett has been on the American naming charts for boys since the U.S. government began tracking naming trends in 1880. In fact, it was back then that Everett was most successful. The name popped on and off the Top 100 list of most commonly used boy names between the 1880s and early 1920s. From that point on, Everett would begin a slow decent down the charts. The low-point of the name’s usage came in the mid-1990s when Everett was only moderately used. The name has shown a slight comeback now that we’ve entered the 21st century, but nothing monumental. The increased interest in this name is probably owed to the trend that uses surnames as forenames. Everett sounds very Anglo and sophisticated. It’s a strong name that’s not crazy popular so it has retained some uniqueness. Just for fun, you can always use Rhett (as in Butler) for a nickname – giving this English surname a stately southern sensibility.
