Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Faustina

Faustina is a name with very old roots. Dating back to the days of ancient Roman civilization, Faustus developed as a cognomen (the third name in the three-part Roman naming structure). Cognomens were originally nicknames that would later become hereditary. The word “faustus” in Latin means “fortunate, auspicious, lucky, favorable” and was likely originally given to a man who enjoyed a fair amount of favorable conditions in his life – one who was always lucky. Adding to Faustus’ endurance as a personal name were several early saints who died as martyrs for their Christian faith (that doesn’t sound so auspicious to us!). Back then, however, it was a high honor to die a martyr (and early Christians were eager to demonstrate their faith in such a way). The legendary German character known as Faust (and popularized by Goethe) is also brought to mind. He’s the guy who sold his soul to the devil in order to achieve his material aspirations. In any case, Faustus morphed into Faustino among the Italians, Portuguese and Spanish. The feminine Faustina is mainly used by Italians and Faustine (the French version) is extremely popular in France today.
