Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Gavyn

Gavyn is a slightly altered spelling of Gavin; one which swaps the “i” for a “y” thus giving the name a slightly more Welsh flavor in our opinion. Gavin (or in this case Gavyn) are Celtic names derived from the Welsh name Gawain which is believed to come from the Brythonic branch of the Celtic languages, from the elements “gwalch” + “gwyn” meaning “white hawk of battle.” Gawain’s popularity spread outside the confines of the Welsh borders during the Late Middle Ages as romantic tales of chivalry with respect to King Arthur and legendary Knights of the Round Table spread throughout Europe. Gawain was one such Knight, said to be the nephew of King Arthur himself. According to one version of Welsh mythology, Gawain’s power grew as the sun heightened in the sky, and diminished as the sun set. Although the name is several hundreds of years old, it did drop back into obscurity in the 18th and 19th centuries, before experiencing its most recent revival in the 20th century. Gavin is basically the Anglicized form of Gawain and Gavyn is another respelling.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME GAVYN

The Gavyn spelling appears to be a 21st century invention; the name only just appeared on the Top 1000 list in 2001. Not coincidentally, that was the year following Gavin’s arrival on to the Top 100 list of most favorite American baby boy names. So as Gavin has become trendy, some parents have decided to change it up a bit and go with Gavyn. Usually we aren’t big fans of respellings, but in this case we make an exception. Welsh names are often filled with “y”s and “w”s and since Gavyn is ultimately derived from the Welsh Gawain, we like the looks of the “y”. The spelling of Gavyn has only done “okay” in comparison to Gavin – in fact, Gavin is actually 30 times more popular than Gavyn. The only caveat with Gavyn is that your kid will go through life repeating “Gavyn. That’s Gavin with a y”. We’re sure that can get old sometimes.
