Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Giana

Giana is a small alteration of the Italian Gianna (whereby Americans have arbitrarily dropped one of the “n”s). Gianna is the short-form of the name Giovanna which is the female version of the Italian male name Giovanni. The name Giovanni is essentially the Italian equivalent of the English name John. John and Giovanni are both linguistically derived from the Latin “Iohannes” which came from the Greek name “Ioannes” which ultimately originated from the Hebrew “Yochanan” meaning "Yahweh (God) is gracious." Apparently, in ancient times, the “John names” were given to children born to late-in-life parents since John the Baptist’s mother (Elizabeth) was well past child-bearing years when God “graciously” gave her John. Just as Giovanni, Gianna and Gia are Italian female forms of John, the English equivalents would be Joanne, Jeanne and Jane. Giana is a new spelling apparently created by Americans. Italians do not spell Gianna with one “n”.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME GIANA

Giana made her appearance on the American female name charts in 2002, clearly in response to the growing popularity of the correctly spelled Gianna (which happens to be a Top 100 favorite girl’s name today). The spelling of Giana has seen growth in usage since her debut, but she appears to be leveling off or declining at the moment. Perhaps some parents are awakening to the fact that Giana is actually misspelled. Then again, parents can spell their childrens’ name however they wish – and trust us, that’s exactly what American parents do. It’s just that Gianna has such an ethnic sensibility and Italian flavor, why would anyone want to alter her original charm? It is a relatively minor alteration (to drop one of those “n”s) but it still looks funny to us.
