Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Grant

The name Grant is the transferred use of an Anglo-Scottish surname which is derived from the French word “graunt” meaning ‘great, tall’ and was introduced to England by way of the Normans. The name is ultimately derived from the Latin “grandis” meaning ‘grand, large.’ Another etymological source suggests that it originated as a personal name in pre 7th century Old England from “granta” meaning ‘slow river.’ As a family name, Grant emerged in Scotland and was borne by a famous clan dynasty starting in the 13th century and headed by the sheriff of Inverness, Sir Laurence le Grant. The United States is mainly responsible for Grant’s usage as a given name, probably as a tribute to the 18th U.S. President and civil war hero, Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885).

Grant has been on the U.S. popularity charts since the government began tracking naming trends back in 1880. The name has constantly maintained moderately high usage for over 100 years but is currently experiencing some of its highest popularity today. Grant has never managed to hit a spot on the Top 100 list of most common boy’s names, but it came close in the late 1990s. The name is most popular in the states of Nebraska and Iowa, arguably states that seem to prefer simple, straightforward, one-syllable sounding names for their little boys. Historic Figures

WITH THE NAME GRANT

If there was such a thing as paparazzi in 1869, then Grant would have been their star celebrity. Seriously, this man was the most popular person in America (well, at least in the North). Elected at the age of 46, Ulysses S. Grant was then the youngest President to achieve office at the time (he served between 1869 and 1877). Although he did not receive the White majority vote, it was the voting freed Blacks who helped put him into office (12% of the popular vote). As General of the Army, Grant played one of the most dominant roles in the Civil War (after Lincoln, of course) and was the ultimate war hero. Fiercely loyal, this military man was also known to be shy, humble and modest. His presidency was marked by ongoing problems with Reconstruction. The North wanted to punish the South and the South wanted to punish the Blacks. He had naive faith in his subordinates, but this was politics after all and not war. Scandals and corruption ruled over his commands. Known as the "well-intentioned" president, most of his efforts failed. But he was for equality and he did a lot to protect Black people in the south. Ulysses is actually the Latin equivalent of the Greek Odysseus (the mythological hero of Homer's Odyssey) meaning "the one who is wrathful or hated". But here's a little known fact for you: Grant's birth name was actually Hiram Ulysses Grant (Hiram is from the Hebrew meaning "exalted brother"). So where does the middle initial S come from? Grant's mother's maiden name was Simpson, so by adopting Ulysses as his first name and Simpson as his middle name, he effectively gave himself the initials U.S.

Grant Wood was an important American painter who hailed from the state of Iowa and is best known for his rendering of the rural Midwest in his works. In 1920, Grant Wood set out on a trip to Europe, telling his sister, "the art critics and dealers want no part of American art. They think this country is too new for any culture and too crude and undeveloped to produce any artists. You have to be a Frenchman, take a French name, and paint like a Frenchman to gain recognition." Grant would prove them wrong ten years later. His most famous painting, “American Gothic” (1930), caused a sensation. The work, depicting a stern-faced farm couple in front of a rural backdrop with the man holding a pitchfork, is one of the most recognized works of art by any American painter. American Gothic has reached an iconic level of status and is one of the most enduring images of American art – it’s also one of the most parodied, reproduced and viewed. The painting hangs at the Art Institute of Chicago today.
