Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Haiden

Haiden is an Americanized respelling of Hayden. Hayden, in turn, is the transferred use of an old Anglo-Saxon surname originating from a place name, from one of the various places in England called Heydon and Haydon. These location names come from a combination of two Olde English words “heg” (hay) and “dun” (down, hill) so “hay down” became Haydon. The surname may have also originated as a nickname – from the Olde English “hæðen”, an epithet given to a heathen, or one who is "not Christian or Jewish." Lastly, the name Hayden may have been given as a first name as homage to the Austrian composer Josef Haydn (1732-1809) by the music-loving Welsh. In any case, as a given name Hayden has been in use since the 19th century and is currently quite popular for boys in the United States, England and Australia. In America Hayden is considered gender-neutral, but Haiden is mainly masculine.
