Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Hailee

Hailee is an Americanized respelling of Halley, Hayley and/or Hailey which are Anglo-Saxon surnames originating from England and derived from location names. These surnames most likely came from Hailey in Oxfordshire, a county in the southeast region of England (the town name was first recorded as “Hayle” in the 13th century). Hayley comes from the Old English words “hēg” (meaning ‘hay’) and “lēah” (meaning ‘clearing’) so the surname would have identified a person who dwelled in or around a hay clearing. The given form of the name really caught on in the United States in the mid-1980’s when Halley’s Comet came through the earth’s atmosphere in 1986, a rare event visible to the naked eye that happens only once every 75 years!

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME HAILEE

The first of the “Hailey” names to appear on the charts was Haley in 1974 and Hailey followed in 1982. Only for one brief year (1986) did the name Halley appear – which is the actual spelling of the infrequent comet that passes through our atmosphere (scheduled again for sometime around 2060!). Now, for course, there are ten spelling variations of the name on the female naming charts. This is one of the most modified and respelled names in existence, which is sure to cause frustration for kindergarten teachers across America as they try and keep up with the many forms of this name. It also just means that girls named Hailey/Hailee (etc) will go through life having to confirm and reconfirm the spelling of their name. The variant of Hailee is not one of the favorites (currently given to less than 5% of the Haileys being born each year). All the names sound exactly the same – except for Halle/Hallie could be pronounced HAL-ee instead of HAY-lee. In any case, the “-ley” suffix is probably the most standard and traditional. The “-lee” suffix is cutesy and youthful. And the “-leigh” suffix is fanciful and girly. Just depends on the preference of the parents, but Hailey and her sisters are pretty ultra-trendy names.
