Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Harmony

The name Harmony is derived from an English vocabulary word that ultimately came from the Greek “harmonia”. In Greek mythology Harmonia was the goddess of brotherhood, sisterhood, happy marriages and harmony. She was the product of an adulterous affair between Ares (god of war) and his lover Aphrodite (goddess of love). As the child of this juxtaposed union of gods, Harmonia was given the unique power to end conflicts and bring people together harmoniously. Ironically, Harmonia’s own life wasn’t exactly melodious. Aphrodite’s jealous husband Hephestus (god of volcanoes) was not keen on his wife’s illegitimate daughter and gave Harmonia a cursed necklace on her wedding day; unfortunately this necklace doomed her and her descendents to endless misery. The necklace did indeed cause Harmonia strife until she and her husband were eventually turned into dragons and sent to the Island of the Blessed to live in peace and harmony for eternity. So Harmony's story does have a happy ending. Harmony is also the musical term signifying when a combination of notes and tunes are sung/played at the same time, providing richness to the melody. The female given name Harmony has been in occasionally use among English-speakers since the 19th century.
