Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Hilary

Happy Hilary means just that: “cheerful”. The given name Hilary was first popularized in the Middle Ages as a gender-neutral name, derived from the Old Roman name “Hilarius” from the Latin “hilaris” meaning “of good cheer”. The Latins borrowed the word from the Greek ‘Ιλαρος (Hilaros) meaning the same. St. Hilarius of Poitiers, Gaul (present-day France) was a 4th century saint later named one of the 35 Doctors of the Church for his written theological contributions. St. Hilary was well-known and highly respected throughout Europe in the Early Middle Ages, even extending up to England. It was he who influenced the long-enduring usage of his name. Adding further religious currency was a 5th century Pope, also named Hilarius. Naming children after important Biblical characters, saints and popes was the de-facto trend in medieval times, practically a law. Times were precarious back then (plagues, famines, infant mortality rates), so parents needed all the protection they could get. When we look at names that have persisted since the Middle Ages, we can look confidently for a saint. Many, many of the names we use today are owed to this fact. Because St. Hilary was especially revered in medieval England, the name spread among English-speaking people. Eventually its usage waned, but Hilary was revived more recently in the 20th century – this time for baby girls.

All About the Baby Name – Hilary

Personality

OF THE GIRL NAME HILARY

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME HILARY

Hilary wins the cliff-diving contest. Just look at the chart below. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before. Hilary first appeared on America’s Top 1000 list of baby girl names in 1949 (Hillary with two “L”s came along in 1963). The name grew steadily in popularity as the 20th century progressed toward the 21st century, but then... BAM! Bye-bye now. Hilary seriously went from respectable moderation (position #233) to nothingness. And it happened quickly, like over-night quickly in 1992. No coincidence, 1992 was the year Bill Clinton got voted into office as the 42nd U.S. President after a campaign which thrust his wife, Hillary, into the national spotlight. After making some derisively ill-fated remarks on “60 Minutes” about Tammy Wynette “standing by her man” and non-working women who stay at home baking cookies, American women collectively rejected her and one way they made this clear? They stopped naming their baby girls Hil(l)ary. All we can say: that’s just an unfortunate outcome for a perfectly lovely, “happy” name. Future generations are sure to resurrect her. We’re confident about that. We also love that Hilary is a Number One in numerology – a very strong number. No wonder women felt threatened by the Boss’s ambitious wife.
