Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Ibrahim

Ibrāhīm is the Arabic form of the Hebrew name Abraham, borne from the Bible by the first Jewish patriarch with whom God made a covenant in Genesis 15 promising a multitude of descendents (as many as the stars) and “To your offspring I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates” – the land of Canaan (present day Israel) “for an everlasting possession.” In Genesis 17:5 God says “No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations.” This explains the meaning of Abraham’s name. The Hebrew ʼaḇ-rabin translates to ‘father of a multitude.’ Aside from the fact that Abraham fathered Isaac, who fathered Jacob, who fathered the Twelve Tribes of Israel – Ibrāhīm is also equally important to the Arab people as to the Jews. That is because Abraham (or Ibrāhīm to the Arabs) also fathered Ishmael (or Ismā’īl), the founding father of the Arabic people (Ishmael was actually Abraham’s first born). For more on the story, please look up the name Ishmael. Clearly Ibrāhīm/Abraham did indeed father a multitude on nations as the patriarchic figure for both the Arabs and the Jews.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME IBRAHIM

Ibrāhīm did not appear on the U.S. popularity charts until 1990 mainly due to the fact that America has never had a huge Arab population. However, now that Muslims make up roughly 4% of the American population, we are starting to see more and more names of Arabic origin creep onto the charts. Names like Fatima have enjoyed crossover appeal, but names like Mohammed and Ibrāhīm are pretty restricted to the Arab-American community.
