Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Izayah

Izayah is a modern Americanized repurposing of the classical Biblical name Isaiah whereby the name is rendered more phonetically. Isaiah was one of the most important of the Major Prophets in the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible). The name comes from Hebrew “Yeshayahu” meaning “Yahweh (God) is salvation.” As an important Israeli prophet living circa the 8th century B.C., Isaiah is regarded highly among Jews. He prophesized that the Children of Israel would be exiled from their homeland but assured them that God would not forget them and would bring them back to their Promised Land. However Isaiah’s prophesies are also of critical importance to the Christians since he foretells the coming of the Messiah. It is for this reason that the religiously austere Puritans resurrected the name after the Reformation in the 17th century. In more recent times, African-Americans have embraced the name and today it’s enjoying widespread usage across North America (U.S. and Canada). Izayah and Izaiah emerged as “yooneek” spellings of Isaiah. Izayah is a spelling that seems to be used almost exclusively in the United States and Canada.

Young men named Izayah will generally go through life confirming and reconfirming the eccentric spelling of their name as a result. A lot of people feel this is a small price to pay for added uniqueness while others find it a nuisance.
