Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jada

The name Jada comes from the Hebrew word “yadha” meaning ‘he knows, the knowing one.’ Jada is borne in the Bible as a male name in the first book of Chronicles in the Old Testament as the son of Onam. Since Jada is predominately a female given name, it could also be a fanciful spelling of the gemstone name Jade, thought to protect against intestinal or stomach complaints (the Spanish origin of the name translates to ‘stone of the bowels’). The ancient stone jade is also known for its properties in attracting love and/or money. We also wonder if the original Hebrew word (yadha) gave birth to the lingo “yadda, yadda, yadda” roughly translating into ‘you know the rest’ – since the original meaning is one of knowledge. In any case, Jada has only come into use during the latter half of the 20th century.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME JADA

The female name Jada makes her first appearance on the U.S. popularity charts in 1969 at position #895 (low usage). Jada has very little movement on the charts for about 20 years and then – BANG! – the name advances over 700 positions on the list of girls names in four short years (between 1992 and 1995). Clearly, the much admired actress and celebrity Jada Pinkett Smith influenced the popularity of her own name as she gained fame. By the year 2000, Jada lands a spot on the Top 100 list of most favored girls’ names; quite an achievement. However, recently the name slipped off of the list in 2008 but still holds a respectable position on the charts. Despite its masculine Biblical roots, the name is very modern, simple and pretty. It provides a two-syllable option to the ever-popular Jade and it belongs to the “J” category of names – a first letter that appeals to many American parents (like A, M and K names). Jada is easy to spell, easy to say and just an all around lovely name.
