Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jael

Jael is a Hebrew name, from Yaél meaning “ibex” or “chimois” (which are species of wild mountain goats), from the root yaél meaning “to profit, to ascend” (perhaps in reference to the goat’s nimble ability to ascend mountains with ease). Technically speaking, Yaél is a female name, borne from the Hebrew Bible and Christian Old Testament as the wife of Heber the Kenite. Living in the 13th century BC (in the days of Deborah), Jael appears in the Book of Judges 4:17-22 as the woman who “smote” (killed) Sisera, the commander of the Canaanite army, by driving a tent peg through the temple of his head while he lay asleep in her camp (thus saving the day for the Israelites). Despite the fact that Jael’s name was first considered female over 3,000 years ago, it is largely considered a gender-neutral name today.
