Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jamya

Jamya is typically spelled Ja’Mya and was most likely popularized by hip-hop record producer James Dewitt Yancey (known better as J Dilla). He named one of his two daughters Ja’Mya Sherran Yancey (the other daughter is named Ty-Monae Whitlow). Highly regarded as one the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, working with artists like Ghostface, Killah, Busta Rhymes, Kanye West and more, J Dilla’s life was cut short at the age of 32 in 2006 by a rare and fatal blood disorder. His legacy continues as appreciation for his contributions to the hip-hop scene are acknowledged universally. During the height of his career in the early 2000s, media attention brought exposure to the names of his children, and Ja’Mya hit the female naming charts in the United States (Ty-Monae has never made the Top 1000 list, however). As an invented name, Ja’Mya has no etymology or specific meaning. It’s just a name with flair and pizzazz.

Ja’Mya first appeared on the American female naming charts in 2001, rose to position #640 on the charts in 2005, and then dropped back down to obscurity. No longer on the Top 1000 list of girl’s names presently in circulation in the United States, Ja’Mya had a brief ride on the charts. We should mention that Ja’Mya did manage to achieve a hard-won spot on the state of Mississippi’s Top 100 list of most commonly used girl names (2008). Not coincidentally, Mississippi has the highest concentration of African-Americans as a percent of overall population compared to any other state. When we first saw this name (Jamya) we were confused by the pronunciation, assuming at first it was “JAM-ya” until we saw how it’s normally presented in style: Ja’Mya.
