Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jared

This modern sounding name was actually borne from the Bible as a descendent of Adam (Genesis 5:15-20). The name comes from the Hebrew root word “yrd” meaning ‘he who descended’ which makes sense because Jared and his kinfolk were busy living long lives and breeding a whole slew of descendents between Adam and Noah. The other interesting distinction about Jared is the fact that he’s the second oldest person ever to live in the Bible. According to Genesis, Jared died at the age of 962; we couldn’t make this stuff up if we tried. (Incidentally, Jared’s grandson, old Methuselah, had him beat by seven years, as he lived to be 969). Apparently they had some really good super-vitamins and HMOs at the beginning of time. Jared was occasionally used by the Puritans; it was their custom to pick lesser-known names from the Bible as a display of modesty when naming their children. For the most part, Jared has experienced most of its popularity in the 20th century.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME JARED

The name Jared showed up on the U.S. popularity charts in 1882 then disappeared. The name reemerged in the 1930s and 40s, but had a tough time sticking to the charts. Finally, by the 1950s and 60s, Jared was clearly on his way to stardom after so many false starts. The name would hit the Top 100 list of most commonly used boy names in 1975 and stay there for almost 30 years. The name’s heyday came in the 1980s and 90s when it pretty much averaged around an impressive #60 on the charts. As we’ve turned into the 21st century, however, Jared appears to be losing its magic. The name has fallen at a pretty fast clip and now enjoys only fair-to-moderate levels of popularity. Jared feels like a very modern name, rather than a crusty old Biblical name. Quite literally ‘he who descended’ is a perfect name for your baby since he is descending from you! We know that Jared is a little out of style today (compared to 15 years ago), but it’s still a cool name.
