Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jasiah

Jasiah looks like a Biblical name, but it’s not. Jesiah is a new coinage, possibly a corruption of Josiah (which is a Biblical name). Josiah is a Hebrew name meaning “God heals”; he was borne from the Bible, specifically in 2 Kings 22-23; he lived during the 7th century B.C. At the ripe old age of eight, Josiah became King of Judah following the death of his father, Amon, whose unpopular reign led to his assassination. Despite his youth, Josiah went on to become one of Judah’s greatest kings. He initiated reforms following the discovery of a scroll, the Law of Moses, and returned to the worship of Yahweh alone. It is reported in the Bible that there was never a king like Josiah “who turned to the Lord with all of his heart and with all of his soul and with all of his might, according to the Law of Moses.” [2 Kings 23:25]. Unfortunately, Josiah would later die in battle against the Egyptians. The name was adopted by the Puritans in the 18th century and has a long history of usage in the United States. Josiah is currently a Top 100 favorite boy’s name in the U.S. so we’re guessing it was him who inspired the creation of Jasiah.

OF THE BOY NAME JASIAH

Jasiah is a pretty new coinage and relatively uncommon. The name first appeared on the boy’s chart in 2006 and it hasn’t done a whole lot since then (except for mild gains in usage). It’s totally Biblical looking but without being Biblical, so there’s no real interesting story behind the name. It’s essentially a made-up American name with no etymology or any real meaning. A pretty random choice all-in-all.
