Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jayda

Jayda is a fancy respelling of Jada which comes from the Hebrew word “yadha” meaning ‘he knows, the knowing one.’ Jada is borne in the Bible as a male name in the first book of Chronicles in the Old Testament as the son of Onam. Since Jada/Jayda is predominately a female given name, it could also be considered a fanciful spelling of the gemstone name Jade, thought to protect against intestinal or stomach complaints (the Spanish origin of the name translates to ‘stone of the bowels’). The ancient stone jade is also known for its properties in attracting love and/or money. We also wonder if the original Hebrew word (yadha) gave birth to the lingo “yadda, yadda, yadda” roughly translating into ‘you know the rest’ – since the original meaning is one of knowledge. In any case, Jayda (like Jada) has only come into use during the latter half of the 20th century.

Popularity

OF THE GIRL NAME JAYDA

The name Jayda first appeared on the U.S. popularity charts in 1997 which was right around the time that Jada had soared up the charts. Jayda (like Jaida) became another respelling of the more popular name Jada (which itself was influenced by the popularity of actress Jada Pinkett Smith in the earlier 1990s). Once Jayda hit the charts about 15 years ago, the name has only had upwards movement on the charts, although its year-to-year improvements are showing signs of slower growth. Jayda has yet to see the levels of popularity currently enjoyed by her sisters Jada and Jade, but her position on the charts is impressive enough. Despite its masculine Biblical roots, the name is very modern, simple and pretty. We tend to prefer traditional spellings (Jada), but Jada, Jayda or Jaida – they’re essentially all the same. It just comes down to the preference of the parent. Although, if we may be so bold as to say, Jada is probably the most “knowledgeable” of all the spellings.
