Jerimiah

It looks like Jerimiah is an accidental misspelling of Jeremiah, or perhaps some parents feel like it looks more phonetic. The name Jeremiah comes from the Hebrew Yirmeyah meaning “appointed, exalted by Yahweh” and/or the word yirmәyāhû which means “Yahweh has established.” Jeremiah is borne in the Hebrew Bible (Christian Old Testament) in a book that bears his name. Appointed by God “from the womb,” Jeremiah is often referred to as the “Weeping Prophet” given his gloomy subject matter. Arguably the most depressive person in the Bible, poor Jeremiah has the unfortunate commission from God to prophesize the destruction of Jerusalem at the hands of the Babylonians. Jeremiah must bear witness to this horrible event knowing full well that it could have been prevented if only the people had listened to his admonitions to repent! The name was mainly popularized by the nonconformist Puritans after the Reformation. It was a common practice among religious dissenters like the Puritans to name their children after Biblical characters who personified moral and religious strictness. They saw it as an act of modesty.
