Etymology & Historical Origin of the Baby Name Jett

Jett is a 21st century coinage mainly popular in the United States and Australia. It is the altered spelling of “jet” which refers to a certain type of airplane propelled by a jet-engine making it quite a bit faster than the old prop planes. The name could also be a derivation of the deep black color described as “jet-black”. Lastly, the name Jett could refer to the dark brown or black geological material so named “jet” which is developed from decaying wood under extreme pressure. This “gem” is said to aid in the purification of the liver and kidneys, and it is also supposed to neutralize negative energy, particularly magical curses or demonic possessions. Whatever the reason behind the usage of this name, it’s a 21st century, modern coinage. It appears to be only used in the United States and Australia.

All About the Baby Name – Jett

Personality

OF THE BOY NAME JETT

The number one personality is a leader - strong and competitive. They are willing to initiate action and take risks. One personalities work hard toward their endeavors and have the ability to apply their creative and innovative thinking skills with strong determination. They believe in their ability to succeed and are too stubborn to be hindered by obstacles. Ones meet obstacles head-on with such mental vigor and energy that you better step aside. They resent taking orders, so don't try telling them what to do either. This is an intensely active personality, but they are also known as starters rather than finishers. They have a propensity to become bored and will move quickly to the next project if not properly challenged.  They are the ones to think up and put into action new and brilliant ideas, but they are not the ones to stick around and manage them. This personality has an enthusiastic and pioneering spirit. They are distinctly original.

Popularity

OF THE BOY NAME JETT

John Travolta (the actor and well known aviation-aficionado) and his actress-wife Kelly Preston famously named their first son Jett in 1992. Apparently, they were ahead of the trends because the name Jett did not hit the male naming charts in America until 1999. The name seems to be climbing the charts as we begin our second decade of the 21st century. We must say, though, they love this name Down-Under. In Australia, Jett is on the Top 100 list of most favored boy names. In the United States, it is still only used very moderately (roughly 900 boys a year). Jett is a very masculine name, but it also has a mysterious and elusive quality much like Jett Rink, a central character in Edna Ferber’s 1952 novel, “Giant” (later made into a well-received and high-grossing 1956 movie starring James Dean as Jett Rink). Jett is a cool name. It’s different, but it’s not for everyone. We expect parents to pick this name for very specific reasons.

Literary Characters

OF THE BABY NAME JETT

“Giant” was a 1952 novel written by Edna Ferber and made into a 1956 film starring Rock Hudson, Elizabeth Taylor, and James Dean as Jett Rink (Dean died while the movie was in post-production). Jett Rink is essentially a loner-type, man-of-few-words but hard-headed and tough, employed ranch-hand on a large Texas ranch. One of the owners of the ranch dies unexpectedly and leaves Jett a small patch of land within the sprawling million acres – a scrap of land which, it’s later discovered, produces enough “black gold” (oil, that is) to make Jett a rags-to-riches millionaire. The novel follows its characters from the 1920s to the 1950s and touches upon the many social problems faced within the Texan borders during the days of early oil tycoons – racism, bigotry, feminism. It’s a fine book, but we highly suggest the movie – a great epic not to be missed for any film-buffs out there.
